Surface repair workflow

Repair small surface defects without repainting the photograph.

Scratch and Dust Remover focuses on local marks introduced by age, scanning, storage, or a dirty source surface. It is designed for small defects where neighboring pixels provide enough evidence for a conservative repair.

Local repair

Small marks are addressed in place rather than triggering broad scene reconstruction.

Texture continuity

Skin, paper grain, fabric, and background texture remain important review boundaries.

Restoration companion

The tool can complement Old Photo Restoration when surface damage is a distinct issue.

Clean the physical source first

When safe for the material, remove loose dust from a scanner or protective surface before capture. Digital repair should not replace careful handling of the original photograph.

Good repair targets

Small dust spots, thin scratches, scanning debris, and isolated surface marks can often be reduced when the surrounding image is clear.

Large damage is different

Tears, missing corners, writing across a face, and broad chemical damage require substantial reconstruction. This focused workflow does not guarantee accurate recovery of large absent regions.

Inspect pattern continuity

Review eyes, hair, clothing patterns, architecture, borders, and repeated textures. A successful repair should not smear detail or clone a visible neighboring pattern.
